Chiller tube inspection in the Philippines
Chiller tube inspection starts with the chiller construction, operating evidence and the damage or restriction you need to investigate. APR can help assess internal geometry in suitable accessible tubes. Eddy current, IRIS or other methods may be needed for the specified damage mechanisms. Poor chiller performance alone does not establish that the tubes are fouled.
When should a facilities team review the tubes?
A review may be useful when cooling performance has changed, cleaning acceptance is disputed, recurring restrictions are suspected or a scheduled condition-assessment programme is due. Compare operating records at relevant loads and conditions before assigning a cause.
Facilities teams at semiconductor and electronics plants, hospitals, hotels, malls, cold-chain sites, data centres and process plants may encounter these questions. The actual chiller design determines the tube-inspection opportunity. These are potential applications, not a list of Dezu APRIS clients.
An annual maintenance contract does not automatically include tube-condition inspection. Check what the contract covers for the condenser and evaporator separately, because their construction and inspection requirements can differ. Does APR apply to every chiller?
No. First establish whether the relevant circuit has accessible tubes suitable for the method. A shell-and-tube heat exchanger presents a different inspection problem from a brazed-plate unit or an inaccessible microchannel coil. Confirm which side is being examined and how its ends can be accessed.
Send tube material, bore size, wall thickness, length, map, pass arrangement and details of enhancements, bends, plugs or obstructions. A drawing and prior report are more useful than the chiller’s capacity rating alone.

Should you use APR, eddy current or IRIS?
Choose the method for the examination objective and tube material. APR provides internal-geometry information. Conventional eddy current is used on suitable non-ferromagnetic tubes for selected metal-loss and cracking indications. IRIS provides ultrasonic wall-thickness measurements with suitable access, preparation and water coupling.
The inspection provider must consider expected damage, calibration, geometry and coverage. APR screening does not rule out outside-surface corrosion or tight cracks and does not automatically replace an existing ECT or IRIS programme. Can you check whether chiller tubes were cleaned?
APR may support cleaning validation where internal restrictions can be examined reliably. Define the initial condition, required preparation, tube positions, acceptance criteria and repeat-examination process before the cleaning campaign.
Inspection for metal loss may require different preparation from screening for deposits. Deposits can hide other indications. Record residual restrictions and limitations instead of converting “screened” into “clean”, “undamaged” or “safe to operate”.

Will tube inspection explain high power use or poor cooling?
It may contribute evidence about the tubes, but it does not measure the complete chiller’s efficiency or diagnose every cause of poor cooling. Operating load, water-side conditions and the refrigeration system require their own assessment by the responsible facilities team or equipment service provider.
Bring the operating trend, maintenance history and previous cleaning record to the scope review. Keep a tube-condition finding separate from a claimed energy-saving result; savings require a valid before-and-after performance assessment.
A higher condenser approach temperature can warrant a fouling review against the equipment’s baseline; it does not establish the cause by itself. Trane’s Agility maintenance guidance discusses this for that equipment family. Follow the manual for the actual unit. Trane Agility manual, page 67.
How should inspection fit the maintenance window?
Agree asset isolation and access, the preparation sequence, examination coverage, calibration/reference checks and the reporting hold point with the owner and HVAC/inspection providers. A decision requiring analysis should not be scheduled as though data acquisition alone completes the job.

What information is needed for a chiller inspection enquiry?
Email the site, chiller maker/model, relevant exchanger drawing, tube specifications and count, access arrangement, previous inspection and cleaning records, intended examination objective and maintenance dates. State whether you need field acquisition, analysis/reporting, cleaning or contractor operated rental.
If the problem is still unclear, describe the observed change and who is responsible for reviewing the operating data. That prevents buying a tube-inspection method before confirming the question it must answer.
Can APR inspect copper or titanium chiller tubes?
APR does not rely on the tube metal being magnetic, but that does not establish suitability by itself. Geometry, internal condition, access and the required examination objective must still be assessed.
Will APRIS replace eddy current testing on our chiller?
Not automatically. APR and eddy current respond to different physical features and have different limits. The owner and qualified inspection provider determine the methods and coverage for the expected damage mechanisms.
Can facilities managers enquire without knowing the inspection method?
Yes. Send the equipment information, observed problem, operating or maintenance records and the decision you need to make. A scope review can identify whether APRIS or a different examination route is relevant.
