Waterjet or chemical cleaning for heat exchangers?
Choose the cleaning method from the deposit, exchanger construction, access and required result. Waterjet cleaning removes deposits through the action of water and suitable tooling. Chemical cleaning uses a compatible cleaning solution. Neither is the right answer for every exchanger. The useful question is which method can reach the fouling and leave this unit ready for its next duty.
What changes the choice of cleaning method?
Start with the exchanger drawing and operating history. Identify the fouled side, tube or channel geometry, materials, known damage, deposit type and previous cleaning results. A blocked tube, an accessible bundle and a closed plate exchanger present different access problems. When is waterjet cleaning worth considering?
Consider it when the deposit can be reached by an appropriate cleaning tool and the equipment condition permits the proposed work. Tool choice depends on geometry and deposit, not pressure alone. When is chemical cleaning worth considering?
Consider it when an approved solution can contact the fouling and is compatible with every wetted material. Alfa Laval's gasketed-plate guidance distinguishes agents for inorganic scale from agents for organic deposits. It also offers cleaning in place without dismantling suitable exchangers. Those options are specific to equipment, chemistry and procedure. They are not evidence that any acid can clean any tube or that circulation can reach every obstructed passage. How should the finished cleaning be accepted?
Write the acceptance requirement before the work starts. Removing a restriction, preparing a surface for inspection and returning equipment to service are different decisions. If inspection follows, ask the inspection provider to specify the preparation and reporting it needs. Agree what will be checked, how inaccessible areas will be recorded and who accepts the result. Cleaning evidence supports that handover; it does not itself establish remaining wall thickness or fitness for service.
What should we send Dezu?
Send the exchanger type, drawings or tube details, deposit information, access photographs, previous cleaning issues and shutdown window. Include the inspection requirement if one exists.
